Killing Time Kerry Watts Books Reviews

A quick read but not boring, I enjoyed the intro chapters on the characters and the flow of the story was very nicely crafted two thumbs and one big toe way up.
Four individuals from very different backgrounds disappear in mysterious circumstances, reappearing many years later together as a group. Remarkably, they all seem not to have aged at all. Not only that, they also possess strange powers and appear to be linked together somehow.
They soon come under the watchful eye of police officers Dexter King and Molly Black, who are investigating a series of gruesome murders. Can they catch the killer before he strikes again?

The beginning of Killing Time introduces the characters and what they were doing before their disappearance. They are an interesting mix of backgrounds (married man David, teenager Liam, drug addict Graham and mother-of-two Susan) and I enjoyed their introductions. On their return we see briefly what effect it has had on their families, although only David's is explored in any great detail.
As their powers start to manifest, things begin to get complicated with the media and public at large, especially for Susan. This section was particularly good at describing the friction generated when so-called ‘false prophets’ appear, on both the followers and the cynics, and added some good drama to the situation for the characters. Each individual has their own unique powers (although Graham’s isn’t really used that much, and I wondered if he could have been cut out of the story completely without affecting it much) and together they become more that the sum of their parts.

Why the four disappeared becomes clearer as the story progresses, but unfortunately I found this the weakest part of the story. It’s neither explored in enough detail to be satisfying for the technically curious nor completely left to the imagination for those who like things unexplained. Several questions are raised by the text and the characters but then not mentioned again, leaving things hanging somewhat.

The serial killer subplot and investigation, on the other hand, is interesting and the climax exciting. Dexter and Molly have a good friendship which comes out in the writing and I wanted to spend time with them. The killer is given motivation for their actions and is believably scary. I did think, however, that there may be more going on under the surface with the killer (there is one throw-away line which suggests this) but this was not explored further.

I don’t usually bother mentioning layout or minor errors in book reviews, as with self-publishing it’s often a case of going in with your eyes open. There are some formatting errors here, however, that I feel need to be addressed for ease of reading. One is that due to extra whitespace the smart quotes open instead of close at the end of a dialogue section, which can be a big confusing. The main issue, though, is that there are no paragraph spacers between scenes. One line you’re in one location with one set of characters, then on the next line suddenly the conversation may be happening with other people somewhere else many years later. This does sound a bit like nitpicking, so sorry about that, but it does make a huge difference to the reader and can be very disorientating.
This has not affected the rating I’ve given the book and should be a fairly easy thing to fix with an update.

Killing Time is a novella ( quotes it at 132 pages) and therefore doesn’t hang around too long, or outstay its welcome. At one point one of the characters mentions the X-Files, and this could almost be an episode of that show if you swapped Dexter and Molly for Mulder and Scully. So, if you enjoy that blend of pseudo-science / paranormal mystery story, this novel will be right up your street.

3/5 stars
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to give this 3 1/2 stars. I wish had a half star choice. The book has an intriguing premise and the two police officers seem to be ready for a follow-on book. They are a great pair and I would like to see more of them.

There are two problems with this book. The first is that the book is too short for the issues it raises. There are too many questions left unanswered. Another fifty pages or so would have allowed for more background, more plot and more character development. The second problem is the way the book jumps from one time to another and from one scene to another with no indication that the jump is coming. Maybe this is simply a format problem, but in changing scenes, it would have been helpful to have at least a space between one scene and the next.

This has great potential and with a bit more development could easily reach 4 or 5 stars.
