I just finished The Burgeoning, part of The Heart of The Staff fantasy series by Carol Marrs Phipps. As with the other installments of the series I have read, this book was filled with intrigue, magic, memorable characters, and was a great read.Synopsis (from the author): With both the Great Staff of Power and the Stone Heart in their hands at last, it seems that nothing can stop Demonica and Queen Spitemorta from crushing Niarg and conquering the entire world. King Hebraun of Niarg is dead and not a single Elf is left alive in the Jutwoods.
Spitemorta's husband, King James, tries to ride out of Castle Goll with her Great Staff of Power, but is tortured by Demonica and her and locked away to die in the fleas and fetid straw of the dungeon. He manages to escape across the Great Barrier Mountains, just as the army and people of Niarg are sent out into the countryside by Queen Minuet and Wizard Razzmorten, who flee to the Pitmaster's Kettles in time for Spitemorta and Demonica to effortlessly destroy Castle Niarg. Is this the end of everything?
What I liked: I enjoy the way Carol Marrs Phipps weaves together her tale of magic and fantasy. In this, the fourth book of the series, we see an evolution and maturity of the characters. Demonica and Spitemorta continue to get nastier and more evil, the elves are hunted by the trolls, and Niarg is in ruins. The story effortlessly flows throughout the complex setting and nothing is lost in the shifting of the story.
What I didn’t like: The only negative comment I can make about the book is that it was slow in a few spots. While it didn’t stop me from enjoying the book, it did drag occasionally.
Overall impression: The Burgeoning is a very worthy continuation of The Heart of The Staff series. I can’t wait to read the next book, especially after the cliffhanger ending of this book! Very well done Carol Marrs Phipps.

True to form, for me, this book was equally as entertaining, captivating, and as addictively hard to put down as with each of the previous books in the Heart of the Staff series. I have been so caught up in reading this series and keeping up with each of the characters lives, always looking forward to what new adventure will happen to each of them on the next page or in the next chapter. When I reached the end of this book however, I immediately thought, Oh Noooo! The cliffhanger ending has left me with a feeling of withdrawal. I am hooked and can't wait for the next book in this series to be released.
